Die Tränen des Eros

The Tears of Eros takes its title and a central intellectual impulse from Georges Bataille’s work of the same name. Yet the exhibition is not an illustration of Bataille. Rather, it carries his radical question further: What happens to Eros when love, desire, life and death can no longer be separated from one another? For Bataille, Eros was never something harmless. Erotic experience touches those boundaries at which human beings move beyond security, social order, and ultimately the awareness of their own mortality. Eros means surrender. It carries within itself pleasure and vulnerability, freedom and loss, ecstasy and death. It is precisely within this tension that the exhibition unfolds.

At its centre stands EROS: a locust. The creature appears neither as a naturalistic representation nor merely as a symbol of destruction. The locust embodies a profound ambivalence. Within a very short time, it can destroy what has taken months to grow. Yet in The Tears of Eros, the catastrophe itself is less important than the elemental energy of this living being: feeding, mating, laying eggs, living on — and dying. Everything happens with an almost unsettling immediacy. Here, life knows no moral order. Sexuality, nourishment, reproduction, destruction and death belong to one and the same cycle. Eros exists at its very centre: not as a romantic idea of love, but as a primal force of life itself.

360 tears accompany this creature. They accompany Eros symbolically towards the grave. Yet the grave is not solely an ending. The tears carry him through loss — perhaps towards another beginning, another life, another love, another destruction. Because before we die, we must live. We must love. We must desire, touch, risk and experience.

Behind this work lies an experience that cannot be fully told and perhaps, for that very reason, had to become art: the experience of a great love confronted by death at the very height of its vitality. When someone we love dies, the intensity of what was shared does not simply disappear with them. The body remembers. The touch remains. Desire remains. Moments remain. And precisely where a shared tomorrow has suddenly become impossible, the life that was lived acquires an almost unbearable preciousness. The Tears of Eros emerges from this experience. Not as a monument to death. Nor as a lament for a love that has been lost.

Rather, the exhibition is a homage to that extreme form of love which asks for no guarantees. To two human beings who surrender themselves to love without protecting themselves from its intensity. A love in which physicality and tenderness, sexuality and trust are not opposites, but different languages of the same freedom. Death can bring such a life to an end. But it cannot erase the fact that it was lived. Perhaps this is where the most radical dimension of Eros lies: in the willingness to embrace life even though we know that we will lose. To love despite the mortality of the other. To surrender ourselves even though nothing can ultimately be held onto.

The tears in this installation are therefore not only tears of grief. They are tears of desire, memory and gratitude. Tears for what has been lost — and, at the same time, for the extraordinary fact that it existed at all. Among them stands Eros. He feeds. He loves. He procreates. He destroys. He dies. And life begins again.

Ultimately, The Tears of Eros is not an exhibition about death. It is a homage to the extraordinary freedom of having lived and loved before death.
