Amazonien

YAKU MAMA is the original name for what is now known as ‘Amazonia’. This is how many indigenous peoples refer to this region. The term originates from the Quechua language, which has been spoken for at least 1500 years. YAKU MAMA means: The Great Mother of Water. YAKU is more than just water. It is a framework, a structure, an order, the interplay of all parts within a living whole.

In contrast stands the name Amazonas / Amazon, shaped by the language of the conquistadores, the Spanish conquerors. A name born of projections, of Greek narratives, of the feverish search for El Dorado, which repeatedly led the conquerors astray.

The installation AMAZONIEN welcomes you: A flying river of pirogues carries the visitors’ gaze all the way to the Andes – to the altar. There rises a mighty wall of volcanoes, which halts the onward journey, embraces it, condenses it.

Here the flying rivers gather; the ríos voladores condense into mist and clouds, brush against the leaves of the forests, and sweep through the territory of the condor. With overwhelming force they plunge into the mountains, penetrate their very core, nourish the veins of the rivers, which later set the heart of the Amazon in motion. Powerful currents break up rocks and move landmasses, flooding vast plains and leaving behind fertile silt on the seemingly barren soils of the Amazon.

I'm standing here in the middle of the rainforest and I don't know who I am!
I look inside my dreams, I utter your name, I drink the clear water that flows from your entrails
and let you embrace me with your fresh winds...
You are here, amazing jungle...
You are ever - present in all your immensity...
I want to touch your skin slowly and tenderly. I want to kiss your innermost skin which is covered with woods.
Beautiful birds sing and twitter your name. I am overwhelmed with you. I have you in my heart, amazing Amazon rainforest.
