El beso del tango

El Beso del Tango is a creative project using the movement and music of the tango. The audiovisual installation was created within the framework of such works as “Tango la Queen”; a tango show from Joachim Schloemer with dancers, actors, and a live tango combo which celebrated its premier on the 17th of May 2008.

The heart of the room installation work of Martinez-Vega is the thousands of drawings that will be melded to a video clip which in turn will be projected into the room in three triangle-like parts. Like a large projection surface arranged for tableaux works on canvas—magnifications of the video clip processed drawings—to which the digital image falls like a visually generated soundboard. This appealing picture is the starting point as well as the anchor of the animation, template, and magnifier. The video clip stands for an animated picture, a ‘cuadro animado’, which interprets the single drawn pictures as constructing elements. The mechanically moving picture becomes the ‘Movens’ of our imagination.

The first part of the video begins with a simple display of dancing shoes, which seem to express themselves according to the music. They develop a will of their own, slowly transforming into animal-like creatures then they fade away as if the former figure – now in a pure form – ends as a tachismic spot. The dance continues with mono-expressions and the motif of a dancer with a wooden leg. The unexpected combination of pure feminine beauty and the erotic and sensual tango in this picture undermine cliché and convention alike. In the second section, which explores the waltz—a European variation on the Argentinean tango—the tempo is slowed down by way of photography—and consequently the soundtrack as well. The motif in this piece is a kissing couple dancing to music, which over the course of the video fade into calligraphic images. The figures are being liberated from their former inherent movements, which flow into void. Martinez Vegas’ pictures oscillate between objectivity and abstraction, which converges the everlasting movement and on-going transformations into a single constant.

Both parts formally create the overarching plot for a central third part called ‘Bandoneon’ by the artist. Among simple pen and ink drawings are colored oil-india ink drawings, which enhance the depth effect of their surface and change their quality. At this point Marcello Martinez Vega officially seizes the motif of a woman playing the Bandoneon. It resembles an accordion which is usually played by men, uses it to underline the musical effects of the tango. Once again, Martinez Vega not only breaks conventional pictures, he points towards the character of the tango. Like the tango has no stringent choreography and consists of single figures which are combined in different ways, so is its installation composed of various elements. Not only the connection of different artistic expressions like art or audio and video, the entanglement, the separation and renewal of single moments resemble varying combinations of movement and rhythm, like the tango. In its entirety, the works of Marcello Martinez Vega strive for poetry as well as sincerity. These guiding principles reveal in its implementation personal experiences among common circumstances.

A cooperative openness can be found in the relationship between Martinez Vega and the composer and musician Minarcos, who, according to the drawings, composed the music for El Beso del Tango, while photographer Ramesh Amruth, together with I.T. Medienbarca, is responsible for the technical implementation of the pictures.
