Cielo Tierra y Besos

We do not necessarily fall in love because something is missing, or because what we already have is not enough. Falling in love may arise instead from an inner openness: from our capacity to be touched, again and again, by another human being, by the world, and by life itself.

In Cielo, tierra y besos, love is therefore not understood as possession. Perhaps it is precisely when love becomes profound that it begins to recognise the freedom of the other. It does not seek to comprehend another person entirely, to hold them fast, or to make them one’s own. The beloved remains a being in their own right, with an inner world, a history, and a freedom that even the deepest intimacy should never erase. For Martínez Vega, this is one of love’s essential dimensions: love as an enduring freedom.

Freedom here does not mean the absence of commitment. Quite the opposite. It can give rise to an extraordinarily deep form of connection, because it does not attempt to secure intimacy through possession. It allows two people to come profoundly close without requiring either of them to disappear into the other. Seen in this light, the search for infinite love takes on another meaning. It is not a restless search for ever-new encounters, nor does it suggest that an existing love could somehow be insufficient. The infinite resides instead in the capacity to love itself — in an inner movement that does not exhaust itself.

Love can change. It can deepen, become vulnerable, fall silent, and open again. It can inhabit memory and the present at the same time. Yet when love contains freedom, it does not need to possess the other in order to be real. Perhaps this is where the deeper meaning of the title reveals itself. The sky cannot be possessed. The earth cannot be held forever. And a kiss belongs to no one.

It comes into being between two people. For a moment, they draw so close that distance seems almost to disappear — and yet they remain two distinct beings. Cielo, tierra y besos therefore understands love not as the surrender of freedom, but as one of its most intense experiences. To fall in love is to open oneself to another without consuming them; to allow intimacy without turning closeness into possession; to surrender oneself to the encounter while preserving the freedom of the person one loves.

Infinite love, then, may not be a place we eventually reach. Perhaps it is a way of being alive: the freedom to remain capable of love, again and again, without ever turning love into possession.
